Biography : Antonio Ruiz

Antonio Ruiz, El Corzo, 1892-1964

Born in 1892, he studied in Morelia and in 1916 entered the National Shool of Fine Arts. This artist, distinguished by his particular imprint in drawing and his analytical skill, was known by the nickname "El Corzo" or "El corcito", because of his physical resemblance to a famous Spanish bullfighter. In the twenties he went to Hollywood, where he designed sets for Universal Studios. Academic in training, Antonio Ruiz was admired for his art principles. He helped to promote the Best Maugard drawing method, and was founder and director of La Esmeralda National School of Painting and Sculpture, where he also taught painting. He wnt to the United States several times, where some important museums house works of his. He exhibited in the International Exhibition of Surrealism in 1940 and in numerous collective exhibitions in the United States.
