Clarence Montfort Gihon was born in Philadelphia in 1871. His formal art training began under the tutelage of William Meritt Chase and Kenyon C. Cox. Like many artists of his day who sought to expand on their formal studies, Gihon went on to study in Paris at the Académie Julian with J.P. Laurens and Benjamin Constant. Settling in Paris, Gihon became exposed to the works of the French Impressionists, which strongly influenced his art.
This painting depicts a subject favored by the artist - the coast of Brittany. Like many other leading French and American Impressionsits of the time, Gihon painted such scenes of leisure en plein air, with an emphasis on rendering an overall sense of light and atmosphere, punctuated by bold vibrant color and broken brushstrokes.
Clarence Gihon exhibited extensively at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1806-1914); Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris; Panama Pacific Exhibition (1915); Art Institute of Chicago (1900,1901,1909); and the Paris Salons.
