1859-1913 French Artist French painter
Eugène VIALA was an independant child, undisciplined and rebelling, who used to discourage his teachers.
He thought his boarding school was a sanction and was only drawing while the classes.
This lead Eugène VIAL to be refused from many school.
In 1877, he had anyway managed to fulifl his studies and began then Fine Arts School in Montpellier (South of France). There again, he found it hard to stick to the academic rules and lead an unconditional life until he rendered his military duties. His many provocations got him punished.
In 1881, Viala could try and take a ew start: he took classes at the Julian Academy in Paris.
When he needed, he could let his rebellion express itself in diffrenet ways: aggressive poems, and prints.
When you see VIALA's landscapes full of contrasts or mishapen beings, you have under the eyes what this artist hates or fears, i.e.: human order, riches, oppression and loneliness.
Viala got 4 children from his marriage with Berthe Ducrochet in 1888. He then left his parisian life for Rodez where he was a photographer.
There, he also made some prints, eaux-fortes.
In 1913, Viala's wealthy friend Maurice Fenaille allowed him to have his own workshop in Neuilly, near Paris.
The same year, Viala had a raod accident and died of his wounds.
Eugène Viala has been somehow outstanding in Rodez as still today, one of this city's streets bears his name.
