SAVRASOV Kondratevich Alexei SAVRASOV

1830-1897

Born in Moscow, Savrasov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture between 1844 and 1854. His The Rooks Have Arrived, exhibited in 1871 at the first exhibition of the Wanderers group of which he was a founding member, changed the direction of landscape painting in Russia. From 1857 to 1882 Savrasov was the head of the landscape painting class at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His pupils there included Vasili Polenov, Konstantin Korovin and Isaac Levitan; the former two themselves went on to be teachers there, and took their master's dictum to find beauty in everything on to a further generation of Russian landscape painters.
In his later years Savrasov became an alcoholic, lost his family and finally died in poverty. It is recorded that his funeral was only attended by Pavel Tretyakov and by the doorman of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Savarasov was recently the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
