VERESCHAGIN Vasily VERESCHAGIN

VERESHCHAGIN Vasily Vasiljevich (1842, Cherepovets, Novgorod region -1904, a battleship "Petropavlovsk" near Port Arthur)

V.V.Vereschagin was born in the family belonging to an ancient noble kin. Under the tradition, the young noble man, received the domestic education was necessary to select military or diplomatic career. That’s why he was determined by his parents firstly to Alexander’s military school and then to the Sea Military School in St. Petersburg, despite of obvious boy’s propensity to art. But it had not prevented the young man from the attending simultaneously the drawing classes attached to the Artists Encouragement Society, and then entering in the Art Academy. However the system of teaching in the Art Academy did not satisfy the young artist, though in 1862 he received a small silver medal for the sketch “Beating of Penelope’s grooms by the come back Uliss’’, and for the embodiment of this sketch in a picture received an approval of Council. But this dissatisfaction with work was poured out in a desperate act: Vereschagin had destroyed the composition, “in order never to come back to this nonsense” as he expressed.
