On his death in 1990, he was hailed as the "prince of the music hall" and "a mirror of fashion for 75 years"...

- J'ai fait mienne la phrase de Tanizaki : "Ce n'est pas la fleur qui est visible, mais le vide qui est autour." Une sculpture ce n'est pas une forme posée mais une lame qui structure l'espace. Mon travail débute toujours par un fragment de carton trouvé dans mes réserves . Je colle ensuite un deuxième morceau, puis un autre et ainsi de proche en proche, j'en arrive à une forme plus ou moins évocatrice, mais en suivant la logique propre du volume naissant. Lorsque je pense avoir atteint l'harmonie (au sens grec du terme, c'est-à-dire quand les différents éléments sont bien congruents comme les dents d'un engrenage) alors seulement je décide du matériau à utiliser : contre-plaqué collé, tôle d'acier de cuivre ou de zinc soudée, peinte, ou oxydée. Pour un bronze je pratique de la même manière mais en partant d'une terre, moule en creux, positif en plâtre puis tirage en bronze par un fondeur. Pour le bois je me limite à la taille directe. Au départ je n'ai ni projet, ni sentiment, ni état d'âme : c'est en travaillant que la forme nait. Comme Georges Perec, je ne crois pas à l'inspiration mais à la jubilation du travail.
