Konstantin Andreevich SOMOV
Fils du Garde de l'Héritage Impérial, Konstantin SOMOV est né, a étudié et vécu à St. Pétersburg, avant d'être obligé de changer de pays.
Somov étudia l'Art d'abord à l'Académie pour l'Encouragement des Arts puis à l'Académie Impériale, sous l'enseignement d'Ilya Répin.
Il arrêta son apprentissage là-bas en 1897 après un désaccord avec un de ses professeurs sur la direction de ses travaux.
Somov, en compagnie de ses amis Sergei Diaghilev, Alexandre Benois ou encore Léon Bakst, fut l'un des membres fondateurs du Groupe du Monde de l'Art, ainsi que du journal portant le même nom.
Somov fut nommé professeur de l'Académie en 1918, puis émigra à Paris en 1924.
Grandement influencé par sa ville natale au 18ème siècle, l'art de Somov est précieux, érotique à un niveau effeminé, et délicat au point d'en être extrêmement fragile.
De tous les membres du groupe du Monde de l'Art, c'est peut-être bien Somov qui représente le mieux ce qu'Alexandre Benois voulait dire en parlant de génération qui "en savait trop, et croyait trop peu".

Son of the Keeper of the Imperial Hermitage, Konstantin Somov was born, studied and lived in St. Petersburg, before events obliged him to move abroad. He studied first at the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, then at the Imperial Academy under Ilia Repin. He broke off his education there in 1897 after a disagreement with his teacher about the direction of his work, so antipathetic to the worldview of the old Wanderer. Somov, along with his friends Sergei Diaghilev, Alexander Benois and Leon Bakst, was one of the founder members of the World of Art group, and of the journal of the same name. He was made a Professor of the Academy in 1918, but emigrated to Paris in 1924. Greatly influenced by his native city and the 18th century, Somov's art is precious, effeminately erotic and delicate to the point of being brittle. Of all the members of the World of Art group, it is perhaps Somov who best exemplifies what Alexander Benois meant when he talked of a generation who "knew too much, and believed too little".
