Sam Lock trained at Edinburgh University and Art College, during a particularly notable era of tutors, graduating with an MA in Fine Art and History of Art with honours. His painting practice explores time and space, creating depth through layers of colour, form and textural variations. This effect is achieved both building up the layers of paint, and wearing the surface down with sandpaper and blowtorches. The images created are abstracted and ephemeral, referencing the passage through time and hinting at something beyond, ‘like memories half recalled’.

His studio in Hove is huge, light and airy. He is represented by Cadogan Contemporary and Wimbledon Fine Art, and was included in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2015.
