Alex is a landscape artist who relishes immersion in the elements. He works directly and spontaneously in oils, using expressive mark-making as a way of probing the relationship between form, colour and feeling. A bush pilot in a former life, he has a fascination with perspective in the landscape and the relationship between colour and space.

“What interests me is the way that simple colour chords – like smells - can trigger a powerful feeling of recognition in the viewer; an intuitive response that registers before the eye fully interprets the subject.”

While Alex’s work is strongly figurative in some respects, he is always looking to loosen form to allow colour to speak most clearly. His aim is to convey the specific feeling of a moment in time; what de Causade called “the sacrament of the present moment.”
